In fact, Rick’s true greatest rival is perhaps the most unexpected character in the whole series: Mr. While it’s been set up since season 3 that Rick’s cosmic rival is another version of himself, Rick Prime, the current ongoing Rick and Morty comic series confirms that’s not necessarily true. ![]() So, when Rick speaks directly to the camera, he’s doing it for the benefit of this other dimension (arguably our real world), which is something he only started doing after going to this universe for the first time. This means that when Rick initially traveled to this universe, that’s when he learned that - in another reality - his entire existence is enjoyed as entertainment. In Rick and Morty #57 by Kyle Starks and Marc Ellerby, Rick takes Morty to an alternate reality where they are a television show. However, one comic both reveals how Rick found out he’s a cartoon, and explains how all his previous fourth-wall-breaking jokes can be considered in context. It’s implied that Rick’s meta-moments can just be shrugged off and ignored, as they don’t really impact the wider canon of the show. But in the show, these gags come off as just that: gags. In short, Rick and Morty's 'time travel box' is a trap that Rick perpetually sets for those who try to rob him, which gives actual in-canon importance to what would otherwise be nothing more than a nod to the audience.įans of Rick and Morty are well aware that Rick knows he’s a fictional character, as he regularly breaks the fourth wall and talks directly to the audience. As it turns out, this kind of thing happens a lot, and the stuff in the ‘time travel box’ was actually just the makings for a bomb. In Rick and Morty #47 by Kyle Starks and Puste, a group of aliens tracks Rick down to steal his tech, and rather than putting up a fight, Rick willingly gives them his “Time Travel Stuff” box. However, one comic reveals this ongoing meta-joke is much more than it seems. ![]() Despite that, the box indicates that Rick could invent a time machine if he wanted to, and all the stuff he needs to do so is right on his shelf. Rick and Morty has made it clear that Rick won’t be inventing time travel tech, as the series has openly mocked that particularly tired Sci-Fi trope. The box in Rick’s garage with “Time Travel Stuff” written on it is one of the longest-running gags on the show.
